New 🐧 preprint and great teamwork with @zuluagajd.bsky.social (supported by @jexpbiol.bsky.social travel grant) & A. Lewden

Moulting king penguins exhibit hyperthermia (+1.4°C!) and increased peripheral heat loss; yet it seems controlled rather than a sign of heat stress!

To be, or not to be, part-time in academia?
This is a tricky question that has faced many of us and in @elife.bsky.social we discuss the benefits and challenges of being part-time. With @emiliapsantos.bsky.social and a fantastic, interdisciplinary team!

Point of View: To be, or not to be, part-time in academia
Part-time working can be beneficial for individual academics, and also for academia as a whole.

✨ Great talk by @elisathrl.bsky.social at #EOU2025! 🐦
Insights into how dietary fatty acids shape #metabolism & #thermoregulation — from #mitochondria to whole organisms.
Excited to see how this helps us understand birds facing thermal challenges!

I usually tell people that *so far*, habitat loss, not climate change, has been the major driver of bird population declines... but now we're starting to get analyses directly connecting bird declines to extreme weather events fueled by climate change. 🪶 theconversation.com/70-years-of-...
70 years of data show extreme heat is already wiping out tropical bird populations
A study using more than 90,000 scientific observations shows Earth is getting too hot for many tropical birds.

New paper:
contrasting Adélie penguin foraging behaviour during years of high and low krill availability

Comparative drawing of penguins diving under high or low krill availability. Under high krill availability we can see that the penguins dive less deep, for shorter bouts, and with less distance and duration between bouts. The prey capture within bouts remains constant under high and low krill availability though.
