There's a similar misconception with handguns. In movies they're always drawn with a "shwik" or a "click" which sounds really cool but is caused by loose pieces of the gun that probably shouldn't be that loose.

It's like they say, "Walk softly and carry a 1.21 gigawatt D.E.C."
