I don't know. Maybe it's a little unfair for me to say that about "escapist media" as we call video games now. But that means I hold a whole lot more respect for narrative games that do approach real topics with humanity than caricature.

The real life issues that do get discussed is usually very tame and often distilled into a non-sensical fantastical setting, completely unrecognizable from the message it's trying to tell. Why is alcoholism an issue for mythological gods as if it's set within a modern suburban household?

You get really weird moments where the worst grifter you know would play an RPG and end up saying "yes, racism is bad and we must treat each other equally" ONLY in the context of that game, and a week later he'd talk about how Palestinians are less than human.
arainydancer.bsky.social
I don't think I've ever talked about this specifically but I've got quite the disdain for narrative video games that relies on metaphors and allegories to discuss "real life issues." I don't exactly know why it's only video games that kneecap themselves from telling stories about it specifically.

I had my hands on my head the whole time. It was some of the most insane stuff I have ever seen in any video game... holy fuck

they put something in Silent Hill f that freaks me the fuck out the longer I play it. This is the best horror *anything* I've ever experienced in a very long time. No punches are pulled, no metaphors or allegories. Ryukishi07, I kneel...

In the story, whenever she is faced with a problem she's always at a disadvantage initially. Then she tries out tactics and methods on the fly to figure out how to get out of the predicament. The two love interests witness this and appropriately falls for her. lol

This game does a perfect balance in making her competent and capable but also still vulnerable and down to earth. She's not badass because she's awesome and big, but because she takes risks and is just really good at troubleshooting when it comes down to it.

I can't stop thinking about her. She's seriously one of the best VN protagonists I've ever played. She's cool and stoic, but also full of empathy and affectionate to those who need it. She's a problem solver and risk-taker. By the end of the game 2 characters fall for her, it's not hard to think why

Leave it to her to say the most romantic thing I've ever heard in my life. And she's supposed to be the protagonist!
[Slight spoilers!]

Lyu Xuan, the protagonist of Raining City, saying:
"And every time we argue, we'll just get to know each other better. Isn't that kind of wonderful? Besides... I'm confident that no matter what happens- No matter how long we're together or what we fight about- I'll never choose to leave you."

I always believed that who'd do me in would be a police officer. They all get off on this power play, beating up people and hazing them- Police officers and military servicemen here has killed quite a significant amount of the civilian population.

When I used to go outside by myself, I have to take precautions to keep myself safe. Of course, just as anyone does, especially ladies. But I've never been particularly wary about criminals or thugs wanting to kidnap me for my organs like most people think-

They get to finally enact those types of training videos in a real scenario against "unruly citizens"!
arainydancer.bsky.social
They turned off the electricty for the whole block in Kwitang and shot at people in complete pitch black darkness, while also disabling livestreaming services so that whatever's happening cannot be seen or shown.

Harmless, on its own. I'm not going to dig on that, that's their business. But Indonesian SWAT, or Brimob, I have observed, have either trained with FOG, or are obsessed with these sorts of videos and the aesthetics they present. And so last night-

One armed police was found wearing a baseball cap that has a Forward Observations Group logo. If you don't know what FOG are, the easiest explanation would be that they have a Youtube channel where they upload videos of them training and shooting at night with night vision goggles.

This generation of police officers disturb me because they live off fantasizing about being "operators" without either the managerial or personal constraint. This isn't going to be a dig on Guntubers, but much of their gear and personal taste has developed in conjuction to that content.

A few nights ago, a SWAT van ran into the crowd, carelessly disregarding the question of "what happens if I ram what is essentially an IFV into dozens of people?"

When a delivery driver died under its wheels, they just said they couldn't see him in the blind spot.
