Regarding medical datasets, it seems like some transparent Informed Consent would be relevant.

"Would you like your data to be added to the (anonymous) dataset so that [explain the reasoning]?"

I'm sure a ton of people would cheerfully opt in as an added layer of protection against rare diseases.

If we turn "publicly accessible data" into "anyone can take this stuff and turn it into commercial projects with no limits" then we'll just wind up with an internet with no publicly accessible data. It's total destruction of Copyright and the whole concept of the open internet at large.

The fact that they'll lose a lot of money, and that their customers will have issues is on THEIR shoulders

for just grabbing datasets without the

1. Consent

2. Compensation

or even
3. Attribution

of the people they took the data from.

I can't profit from my fanfiction (except in very narrow ways). I haven't yet officially published my full original fiction, and thus have not yet profited from it.

In any other way, they wouldn't be able to just nab my writing and turn it into commercial profit. This too needs to be cut off.

This was a fascinating rundown of the issues.

As one who's had over 850,000 words (mostly fanfiction but including original fiction) stolen by such a company, I think the only acceptable answer is "You don't get to commercially profit from theft, start over again." Cost to the thieves irrelevant.

Since people are still finding this comment, might I use it to signal boost the #CharityFundraiser this week?

I'm raising money for @seattlechildrens.org hospital. Mostly posting vids of random gaming, or the cats who live under our porch.

I'm vaguely annoyed at YouTube's continued insistence on pushing the Shorts format above all other content. They've got a page devoted to Shorts, they don't need to shove them into the middle of the regular page too.

Got me a browser plugin that hides them, so that's quite the improvement.

Of course, the videos that are taking off are the Shorts format, purely because I happened to record vertical at the time.

One of the stray who had kittens under our porch, the other of my Vergie enjoying being up near the ceiling.

Finally got a chunk of my #KingdomTwoCrowns #Rulerversary run uploaded (huge file, a little over 30 mins, so I'm surprised it went so fast), along with the first #Overcooked2 footage this year.

No donations yet, but the week is young.

Nephew got home! ...but doesn't want to troubleshoot livestreaming this late.

We'll be playing #Overcooked2 and recording it to post later this week. Are we likely to set the kitchen aflame? All signs point to yes!

(This was a previous session with two nephews.)

If you're wondering why there are two episodes on the list labeled "Ep 1", well, the Thor one was more of a proof-of-concept. I'd planned on recording for each of the MCU films I'd watched, but didn't get around to it.

I'm debating if I should do a podcast version -- no visuals means less effort.

I've also uploaded the first two episodes of my #NoRetakes series, which I recorded back in... 2018? yow.

Basically, I sit in front of a camera for about 15 minutes and try to recall the plot of the movie I just watched. My brain focuses on odd details.

In previous years, our sucky internet has prevented us from livestreaming. This year, if my nephew can get his speedy internet to work over here, we might actually be able to do something live! But it'll be a while before he's free.

In the meantime: kitten vids!

(It's the primary reason you became one of my favorite creators -- top three, occasionally top of the entire list. I love characters discussing things that society hushes up or gets weird about. I like unusual perspectives and thought-provoking content.)

Part of it amused me heavily because they were like "These characters stop the action to discuss random topics and don't sound like people anymore"

...referring to scenes/discussions where I've long been "I wish more people talked things out like this! Why do they not??"

Suppose the red flags for the review included the transphobia and the abundant use of "SJW"

but the guy also had some issues reading between the lines -- nuances that even I picked up on, and I'm not great at noticing subtext.

Anyway it was a lot of energy put into tearing apart a thing he hated.
