Thought it might be fun to post some process.
Step 1: Flats and sketch.
Step 2: Rendering elements.
Step 3: Color adjustment.
Step 4. Final lighting pass.

Step one of the piece, showing a gray ring with light grey spike elements, and a dark grey interior. A faint sketch can be seen overlaid.
