As an experiment, I'm sharing my list of books I've read/reading as a WhiteWind long-form blogging post (see: @whtwnd.com)

WhiteWind is a sister site to BlueSky also built on @atproto.com.

You can use it with your Bsky credentials, too.

Ever noticed a walrus’s big, curious eyes? 👁️ They can actually bulge out a bit, helping walruses see both forward and upward, perfect for spotting friends (or predators) above the waves. 1/2

Paradise Rot by Jenny Hval (translated by Marjam Idriss; narrated by Brie Jackman): I think I understand why this 2009 novel saw a recent revival: it brilliantly depicts young adulthood in the postindustrial Y2K years without nostalgia or pity. 9 out of 10. Grossout stuff may not be for everyone.

I'm not going to excuse people for not doing their due diligence, but the major story came out this summer and we're talking about a onetime Oscar winner(!)

(Honestly, I always thought he was creepy dating back to My So Called Life, which always struck me as Yet Another White Show of the 90s).

I'm honestly waiting for his Covenant Eyes data to leak. There is probably some super freaky stuff in there.

For most people New Yorkers in the Catskill Moutains and southward, "upstate" is a general direction, "north of here but not in another state or Canada."

The *idea* of the North Country as a place in NY north of Upstate, you might as well start talking about Hyperborea or Ultima Thule to us.

Not culturally similar but integrated into a larger economic unit, similar to the Boston-to-DC megaregion of the Northeast Corridor + I-95 integrates culturally disparate regions.

You could make the case for a *Great Lakes* mega region that goes from Montreal to Minneapolis, but not a Midwest with Buffalo —at that point, Toronto would be in the Midwest.

North Country, Western NY, Central NY, Hudson Valley and Capital District subregions of NY State looking at this map annexing Buffalo to the Midwest (!) and flattening Syracuse, Rochester, Albany, Ithaca and Plattsburgh into a single "Upstate":

This is the most accurate depiction of the Midwest to date. Wichita has always felt like the last Midwest city while also being the first plains city.

Seen: a child with her mother.

The child held a beloved toy, broken by rough play, weeping inconsolably.

The mother was left to watch the child's innocence bleed out.

Observed: the human tendency to create, love, destroy, and grieve the same object.

An easy rule of thumb: actual agent provocateurs and undercovers will lure people into a crime for which there is a bright red line (i.e. possession of something, acceptance of payment).

Guns, explosives, drugs, money: these are things to be immediately flagged.

"In fact, I want my pain to be inflicted on others. I want no one to escape. But even after admitting this, there is no catharsis; my punishment continues to elude me, and I gain no deeper knowledge of myself. No new knowledge can be extracted from my telling. This confession has meant nothing."

I am becoming obsessed with the concept of caring for some bugs in a terrarium. I envy species that picked an ecological niche that doesn't require developing much consciousness.

I fancy that I could being a kind and benevolent god to them will ensure they remain content and never evolve.

Going back to that raid on the South Shore apartment building. It hasn't gotten much focus that the goons reportedly traveled the same way Patriot Front does: in UHauls.

Ellison's CBS brought on the two editors that got NYT to publish Tom Cotton's 2020 op-ed calling for soldiers to shoot protesters in the streets. Hard to find a clearer editorial throughline than "anyone protesting murder by the state should be killed for it."

Folks, can we please just block and move on like the norm here just a few months ago?

Quote dunking and ratios are really tiring.

Just because bored power users do it to pump up their engagement and their egos does not mean it's fun.
