We’re not going to lie:

this is a HUGE challenge, but we have the previous experience of our EIC-funded project ANEMEL, and we count on the help and financial support of the Clean Hydrogen Partnership and the EU 👥💞🇪🇺

In recent years, scientists and experts have worked hard to develop hydrogen as a clean energy source to help reduce our dependence on polluting resources 👩🔬

In our case, at ASTERISK EU, our goal is to design an electrolyser that can produce energy using seawater as a feedstock 🔋⚡

Do you know why we celebrate #HydrogenDay on October 8th? The reason is quite interesting! 🧐

It turns out that the atomic weight of hydrogen is 1.008 u, making 10/8 the perfect day to discuss the future of hydrogen🗨️

Good morning from Brussels!☀️☕

These days we are learning from experts at the EHW and drawing inspiration from other green hydrogen initiatives🧐

Read our review in the new blogpost, and if you're in the area, come say hello! We promise to be nice😊

Back in April, we met for the first time in Galway, Ireland🫂

During that meeting, we took the opportunity to film our colleagues and capture their enthusiasm for the project📹

However, we are committed to achieving this, as it will enable remote communities, such as those on islands, to produce their own energy in future. 🏝️⚡

Using seawater for electrolysis is a technological challenge, as it contains microplastics, microorganisms and other particles that must be removed. 🦠❌ Also, salinity can corrode our expensive technological devices!

This is where ASTERISK wants to make a difference. 🙌 Instead of using fresh water, we will produce green hydrogen directly from seawater. 🌊 To this end, we will collect samples from three different locations in the Mediterranean Sea.

Nowadays, this process usually involves the use of fresh water. 🫗 However, this poses a problem as fresh water is a scarce resource required for human consumption, agriculture and livestock farming. 👩🌾🐮🛀

The answer lies in water. 💧 Water is not only a key element for life on earth, but also a source of energy. 🌎⚡ Through a process called electrolysis, an electric current splits water into its most basic components, hydrogen and oxygen.

Moreover, the energy used to produce it comes from renewable sources, such as wind and solar power. 🌬️☀️Indeed... That's why we call it green hydrogen! 💡But, where do we get hydrogen from? 🤷

asterisk-eu.bsky.social
As you may know, green hydrogen is seen as a key element to decarbonise our economy. 🏭♻️ The reason is simple: unlike fossil fuels, hydrogen does not release greenhouse gases into the atmosphere when it is burned. 🔥
