We love sharing our passion for astronomy. We've been holding meetings in Edinburgh since 1924. Come to one of our meetings, in person or online - visitors are always welcome.

We managed to capture the close approach of Venus and Jupiter yesterday morning when they were just 51' apart, using our wide-field telescope in Spain. You can just make out 3 of the Jovian satellites.🔭

Timelapse of a night with the Perseids. 169 captured with this NW facing camera on the edge of Edinburgh last night.

We also monitor quite a few comets, including the latest interstellar visitor, I3/ATLAS. Becoming easier to capture at around mag 17 🔭

One of the things we like to do is monitor variable stars. While everyone is waiting for T CrB to go "pop" we watch SU UMa, another dwarf nova that behaves similarly - just far more often and fainter. We caught the latest super-outburst. Our data in blue. 🔭

One of our meteor cameras on the edge of Edinburgh caught the bright fireball reported by many and in the News last night. So bright it saturated the sensor in the next frame. ☄️🔭

If in Edinburgh and look to the NE you can see a really nice display of Noctilucent Clouds. Mesospheric clouds of ice crystals, possibly formed on cosmic dust, so high up at 80km that they are still in sunlight even though normal, lower clouds have now gone grey. 🔭
Beautiful and ethereal!

Coming soon to a planet near you 🔭

Of course the Sun is an obvious target too, as long as you do it safely and with the right equipment. Don't take the risk if you're not sure. This was taken this morning showing the large sunspot group we've been following over the past few days. 🔭

As astro-dark comes to an end here in Edinburgh until August, we like to encourage our members to keep observing through the summer. There's still lots to be done. For example, you can image the Moon with the Sun still high in the sky. Maybe use a red, Ha or IR filter. This was taken at 15:24 UT 🔭

Clouds cleared away in time to catch it from Edinburgh. Moon is so much brighter so the dark side, illuminated with Earthshine shows more detail than the over-exposed sunlit side. 🔭

Our telescope in Spain, ASERO, has been imaging some Peculiar Galaxies. Arp 104 also known as Keenan's System consists of two galaxies joined by a bridge of material spanning around 22,000 light years. It's just so hard to let go sometimes... 😍
Discovered by the amazing William Herschel in 1790 🔭

2 days later on 5 May, Mars will be much closer, only 37' from the centre of M44. Should be easier to catch this one with the Moon absent (although it isn't too far away). 🔭
May 1, 2025 at 7:38 PM
On 3 May, Mars and the Moon will make a visit to the Beehive, the open cluster M44, also known as Praesepe. They will be within 2° of each other. Could make a nice image if you can get the exposure correct since the Moon will be the brightest by far.🔭

Antennae Galaxies taken using our telescope in Spain. Weather has been pretty bad there recently, better in Edinburgh even 😏🔭

Jupiter has been very interesting this winter. Lots to see. 🔭 #astrophotography

While everyone has been taken up with the #PlanetaryParade, our members have been monitoring what's actually been happening on the planets. There've seen new storms and outbreaks on Jupiter, clouds and ice caps on Mars, phases of Venus and Mercury. Here are some of their images. 🔭 #astrophotography

We have an Image of the Year competition in our Society, voted on by members. Last night we announced the winner of the 2024 competition. It was won with this beautiful image of the Elephant Trunk Nebula by Eros Tang, imaging from the centre of light polluted Edinburgh. Just amazing! 🔭

Time to watch another comet try its luck with our star over the next week as it passes perihelion. You can watch C/2024 G3 on LASCO C3

It's the bright object entering top right. 🔭

If you look in the south now you will see the bright planet Venus just above a crescent Moon. A lovely sight. 🔭

The Moon will occult Saturn tomorrow evening (4 Jan 2025). See if you can catch it, possibly with the naked eye, but binoculars or a small telescope will help. This was put together by Alan Pickup with timings for Edinburgh 🔭

The Quadrantid meteor shower was "firing" last night, and should again tonight. One of our meteor cameras caught 147 Quadrantids with this being one of the best. Data from GMN and UKMeteors 🔭

The latest from our telescope in Spain. NGC 891 is a very attractive edge-on galaxy but so many more smaller galaxies in this image too. 🔭 #astrophotography
