In April, The Athletic decided it no longer wanted to cover Penn State football. I was out of work ahead of the most anticipated PSU season in two-plus decades.

Well, they don't know this place like I do. I'm back and would love to have you along for the ride!

James Franklin remembers the boos from 2016 during the Minnesota game. There were more in the the third quarter vs. Oregon. Saturday? It's gonna be a different kind of Homecoming game.

What's it been like around here this week?

How will Penn State respond?

I asked King Mack how he learned Jim Knowles' defense. He showed up at a defensive staff meeting after practice and keeps showing up. Other DBs have done the same.

"Hearing Coach Knowles’ critique helped me understand what he wants. ... It made everything easier for me.”

QB Drew Allar met with reporters this AM. “As players, we’re extremely motived. Not particularly happy (after UCLA). I think just more motivated than ever just after everything that’s transpired. … We got a great group of leaders that are going to be able to help us rebound."

There’s a 12-year sample size that suggests two truths about James Franklin and Penn State football.

Is it time to begin thinking about an exit strategy?

To be clear: He's not blaming one person (this thought didn't even enter my mind when he said it)

"We got to make sure that, you know, we work every single day to make sure all five of us are on the same page and playing at the same level."

Left tackle Drew Shelton on Penn State's O-line: "We knew what the expectation was that we put on ourselves coming into the year and I think a lot of it so far has been some combination of four guys doing something right and one guy not holding up their end of the bargain."

Penn State's RB usage remains a bizarre theme this season.

"Obviously, that was a discussion after the game. It was also a discussion before the game, that we need to get Kaytron (Allen) more touches and more carries.”

So why didn't he?

James Franklin is really good at building programs. He's relentless with it as those at Penn State and Vanderbilt know.

Is it time to start thinking about Franklin building elsewhere?

100%. I was not here to argue otherwise.

Penn State falls from No. 7 to unranked in the AP Top 25. Yeah, it makes sense.

On 4th and 2 with the game on the line, Penn State's offense collapsed. "They brought edge pressure, which we knew it was coming & they beat the block"

A week spent knowing UCLA would take risks, PSU was shocked by an onside kick

Let's lay it all out: insidethelions.substack.com/p/the-day-af...
The day after: Where does Penn State go from here?
We've hit uncharted territory

Penn State really did play the hits of the Franklin era vs. UCLA:
-clock management before the half
-4th and 2 that gets blown up
-Best player not touching the ball (Kaytron Allen) with the game on the line
-One loss again leads to two
audreysnyder.bsky.social
The day after the worst loss of James Franklin's tenure.... Where does Penn State go from here?

-The buyout
-The fallout
-Would I make a change? Should Pat Kraft?
-A program that went all-in and if not now.... when? Ever?

And... Add in 2014. How soon we forget:

How many times has one Penn State loss led to two during James Franklin's 12-year tenure?

Ohio State, Michigan State in 2017

Iowa, Illinois in 2021
Oregon, UCLA in 2025

This loss snapped Penn State’s streak of 34 consecutive wins against unranked opponents.

It’s the first time a football team that was 0-4 or worse beat a Top-10 team since UTEP beat No. 7 BYU in 1985.

Who answers for this one?

Gut reactions after No. 7 Penn State got blasted by UCLA. Yes, you read that correctly.
Blasted by the Bruins
What in the world was that?
