Yes but I'm not sure this invalidates my point?

Well, exactly

Should one not be a little careful in encouraging this line of argument though? It presumes that those in the US illegally would otherwise be worthy targets of blame, and in any case directs ire at all legal immigrants.

So utterly obtuse are your replies, I think you're a bot. Blocked
November 27, 2025 at 6:32 AM
Ok. Go to Companies House, download a selection of company accounts, and you can check for yourself? It shouldn't come as a surprise that businesses pay all these taxes, surely.

"Let's cut that from the NHS instead."

Put that on the side of a bus.
November 25, 2025 at 4:06 PM
Yes, don't get me wrong: any cut should only be a last resort and only be framed as a necessary evil.
November 25, 2025 at 4:03 PM
I can show you 100 years of company accounts in our case that prove otherwise.
November 25, 2025 at 2:53 PM
No. I don't practice any longer. And if you want a platform on which to abuse people gratuitously, may I recommend X?
November 25, 2025 at 2:52 PM
So can/should the wealthy pay more? Yes. Will it solve the problem? No.
November 25, 2025 at 2:51 PM
I don't think that's an easy decision at all, but I think it's one that the country is forced to make because we simply aren't as rich a country as we think we are. We are just a conduit for big money in most cases: other people's money. That's been the UK model for 50 years.
November 25, 2025 at 2:51 PM
I am in the top tax bracket, and fully support the increase in income tax. I'd happily pay 50% given the circumstances.

Nevertheless, that money in most cases comes from businesses, and businesses that are currently maxed out. I think the maths of this is inevitably going to lead to spending cuts.
November 25, 2025 at 2:49 PM
It's of course a different in service industries. On which I would advocate savage tax increases to rebalance things. I would also ban any and all transactions with tax havens, and prison sentences for all tax evasion.
November 25, 2025 at 10:15 AM
No. The taxes companies pay far higher. I come tax is only one element.
November 25, 2025 at 10:13 AM
Only viewed narrowly. Effective tax on our business is 96%. Net VAT, rates, an industry specific sales tax, NI, corporation tax, energy taxes, fuel duties, and finally income tax, means that for everyone £1 I get, the government takes £24. Tax on industry is crippling. And not low by any measure.
November 25, 2025 at 10:00 AM
Fortunately, as a tax lawyer, I don't rely on Beatles songs to tell me about tax.
November 25, 2025 at 9:57 AM
The effective tax rate on our business is 96%. Net VAT, rates, an industry specific sales tax, NI, corporation tax, energy taxes, fuel duties, and finally income tax, means that for everyone £1 I get, the government takes £24. That's quite high.
November 25, 2025 at 9:57 AM
Income tax, not other taxes. The effective tax rate on our business is 96%. Net VAT, rates, an industry specific sales tax, NI, corporation tax, energy taxes, fuel duties, and finally income tax, means that for everyone £1 I get the government takes £24. Where's all the extra tax going to come from?
November 25, 2025 at 9:56 AM
I entirely grasp that. But the effective tax rate on our business is 96%. Net VAT, rates, an industry specific sales tax, NI, corporation tax, energy taxes, fuel duties, and finally income tax, means that for everyone £1 I get, the government takes £24. Where is all the extra tax going to come from?
November 25, 2025 at 9:55 AM
Above a certain level, yes, but not with taxes on their companies at present highs. For everyone £1 I get out of my business, the government has taken £24 through rates, NI, etc etc. That's an effective tax rate overall of 96%.

She would do better assessing the differing tax burdens created by our insane tax system that lets some industries (and people) get away with paying almost no tax, yet others crippled. And, I'm adraid, reducing public spending. The UK isn't as rich as it thinks it is.
November 24, 2025 at 7:13 AM
Tax on the rich and their businesses is already at historic highs, and there just aren't enough anyway to get the money she needs, unless they just start appropriating assets. You only get to do that once.

One of the UK's actually productive industries.
