About that "gold standard science" we've been promised ...
Who's calling the shots at NIH?

Sworn testimonies and internal e-mails reveal for the first time the breadth of DOGE's control over the world's largest public biomedical funder.

DOGE has provided lists of hundreds of grants to cut, and DOGE is now reviewing ALL NIH awards before they're released
NIH killed grants on orders from Elon Musk’s DOGE
Court documents and internal correspondence show the cost-cutting force has broad control over the world’s largest public biomedical funder.

On top of all grant cancellations, there is this.

We should probably remind folks that while the presidents may be immune per SCOTUS, pretty much everyone else can be prosecuted for this clearly illegal move.
Northwestern has not received any NIH funds since March. No written communication about why or what can be done. Thank you Ben Singer for raising awareness at #ATS2025

Everyone 6 months and older is eligible to get a flu vaccine.

It makes no sense to restrict Covid vaccines to only people who have specific medical conditions.

The FDA is basing its decisions on politics, not science.

Interview with @baym.lol lays out eloquently: how his work serves the public and how devastating weaponizing federal grants is. Couldn't have said it any better. Everyone should listen.
@baym.lol is an exceptional scientist, a valued colleague, & a wonderful mentor (with a great sense of humor). Please do take a few minutes to listen to his story here.
The deleterious impact to science, scientists, students, & the economy (cc: @kairyssdal.bsky.social) is unfolding in front of us

I am thinking a lot today about how heavy things feel in my world of faculty doing scientific research. There's the immediate chaos and panic about our ability to pay people and continue our research. But there's also a deeper grief at watching everything get bulldozed for no reason

Unbelievable, indeed.

Thanks to Congresswoman @delauro.house.gov.
DeLAURO: Are you planning to break the law by impounding appropriated funds?

RFK Jr: If you appropriate the funds, I'm going to spend them

D: We have! You're cutting the NIH by $18b. Congress appropriated those funds. How can you justify cutting billions from the biomedical research budget?

One needs to remind her that she is free to have relationships with any and all farmers, and to pet any and all cows, or do both at the same time.

Just don't try to feed raw milk to children.
Sometimes, but not all of the time, your child who drinks raw milk will develop kidney failure and they will sometimes, but not always, recover.

It’s not a risk I would be willing to take.
“When it comes to .. raw milk, I want to be free to form a relationship with a local farmer, look him in the eyes, pet his cow, and then decide if I feel safe to drink the milk from his farm.”

Read up on how things are rotting from the core, while we still have free journalists.

I was naively thinking that the ship was sinking as in ancient Rome, but this is more from the soviet story line...
Matthew Memoli, a middling researcher at NIH, criticized COVID vaccine mandates and DEI, and was chosen by Trump to dismantle NIH. Memoli becomes NIH’s principal deputy director and awards himself and close collaborator Jeffery Taubenberger up to $500 million for in-house vaccine research. Cool.

"The NIH... supported 99 percent of the drugs approved in the U.S. from 2010 to 2019. The agency has had a hand in “nearly all of our major medical breakthroughs over the past several decades,”

The NIH is in a struggle for its (and our) lives. This is existential to America:

For those of you who may be unaware: NIH, the biggest funder of biomedical research on the planet, has not made any new funding decisions since January 21 because it needs to hold meetings that are declared on the Federal Register. No meetings = no funding.

It's too bad we don't have any funds to check his heart or bones.

When they are through with it, there won't be a single brick left on the U.S. science enterprise.
How can we know whether there is anti-science in his heart? I'm sure there's not an anti-science bone in his body.

Never mind the unprecedented and widespread destruction to science Trump, Musk, and cronies are doing.

Some of the scientists quoted in that article need to smarten up.

They do not understand how all of this will affect their lives. When all this is done, I suspect some medical schools to either close or decrease the size of their program. How is that good for the country? If you think finding a PCP is hard now, wait till that happens.
