Just PR'd on my journey to become World's Oldest Man and deserve congratulations. Formerly @theoreticalb (and still [email protected])
The funniest outcome here is that Trump lets Netflix's deal go through but forces Ellison to buy the cable dregs like CNN that Netflix was ditching, because while everyone else knows they're garbage headed to zero, they're the only properties Trump has heard of and he wants them to be Newsmax Lite.

Congratulations to the first and probably last annual recipient of the "What if Maybe I'm Just Like That Huh Then YOU'RE The Asshole" Scholarship.

Good for Texas, but if energy policy was truly transcending politics Florida would be an offshore wind juggernaut powering the entire Southeast instead of a laggard squandering their natural advantage.

Now, I think the answer is "never: that conversation was an artifact of a monoculture with a community of respected cultural elites commenting on its work. The monoculture died, the elites are gone, the articles about it were in magazines that went bankrupt, everyone stopped publishing blogs."

Three decades ago I read any number of articles and blog posts about when video games would find their "Citizen Kane," the game of such cultural import that it would come up in conversations alongside the era's most impactful movie, book, etc.

Me going to the payday lender and getting an insanely bad rate: "Great news, I'm personally creating a new golden age for payday lenders!"

Sits backwards on chair: "Let me tell you a story about ANOTHER carpenter who stood up to a corrupt and murderous regime."

Abandoned on the orders of... Former Florida Attorney General and current US Attorney General Pam Bondi.

That isn't just a "games" thing. I feel like in general novels and films and TV shows aren't positioned as "culturally sophisticated" as much as they used to be. Has anyone released a massive "project to read" book that had wide cultural impact since Infinite Jest (1996)?

I feel like this is an accurate description of games culture two decades ago. But large budget single player experiences are like ten titles a year, and most of the money is in multiplayer games that rarely nod at prestige. Outside of a few Redditors, I'm not sure gamers care about "sophistication.”

Really working to sell that "I never read any news at all" story.

For whoever else had to know more.

I hope they did a special test screening. I hope some focus group sourcing agency got to manage the brief of their lives. I hope it had a nondescript internal code name like "Demographic Group 14.”

MAGA now so broadly unpopular and politically bankrupt even Democrats are adopting it.

"Trump does not give two shits about these or any member of the military" is obviously true, he makes no effort to hide it, and also is so completley disqualifying for the role of Commander in Chief that the media has decided it's partisan to point it out.

I think I agree with this in MOST contexts but I'm pretty sure a lot of these movies would be borderline incomprehensible without having seen, at least, several other movies first that in some cases came out decades earlier.

You could hit Earth with a giant asteroid and a solar flare and 10°C global warming and a chain of supervolcanoes and weaponized smallpox and reconstituted dinosaurs, and it would still be immeasurably more habitable for human life than Mars.

The amazing ideological chimera of "It is perfectly correct for the US Government to coerce the political expression of college professors, immigrants, government officials and entertainers" and "Daddy Musk shouldn't be allowed to decide how many people look at my posts on his website that he owns."
