King Henry of #Haiti might say "told u so". He advocated for #Afrodescendants to access the priesthood. While the Holy See ignored his pleas, he had clergy: of mixed descent from #LatAm, & European critical of the Church's silence on #slavery.

Last speculation: Tuscany's proximity to the Papal State. Stay tuned for my article reconstructing Henry I's negotiations w. Rome. Would ML provide a form of soft power for those interested in getting the pope's ear? She received visits from 🇭🇹 & knew how to write to Rome...7/7

Why Tuscany? Surely, ML longed for a sunnier land than 🇬🇧 & a place where she could freely practice #Catholicism. But Tuscany was also a hub of international nobles, as well as of 🇬🇧 merchants (who administered her wealth & would enable her return to Haiti via Livorno) 6/7
