I love building things.

Data. Web.
Fair. Having to move hosting can be a bit of an inconvenience.

But if you containerise your apps, do some research on available providers (AWS, Azure, GCP, others probably), you could minimise that.

I just disagree with your statement that cloud doesn't last.

...or pay?

I don't get why people expect a service that induces costs to be provided for free, indefinitely.

I really like the premise of open data platform architectures, and the trend we're seeing in adoption, e.g. Fabric sucks, but its OneLake shines.

Though the "no vendor lock" argument feels more theoretical than practical, since there's always more pieces to the puzzle.

Haha I know, I’m a contributor for tsql-utils!

And yeah, microbatch is a godsend!

Thank you for your response! I recognise your pain points from Synapse. It's subpar to other options, to say the least.

I do see they're addressing (some of) the issues, e.g. they have an official dbt adapter now (github.com/microsoft/db...).

Guess I'll need to run a PoC to actually try it out!

Zeker bij gevoelige situaties is men daarom terughoudend.

Now, how would you solve this?

Obviously, money has to be made. I appreciate all the hard work that goes into projects like these.

But is there a solution where the incentives are actually aligned?

Sponsorships come closest, I think.

This also had me thinking about the monetisation of these sort of open source projects.

In this case, the developers offer consulting services to help with implementation & customisation of the project.

This causes a conflict of interest. The better the DevEx, the less they sell, and vice versa.
