Now's probably a good time to finally make a pinned post. Hey there! Writing for tech is my day job, but I also draw, animate, and take photos when I'm not working. I do all four on my website.

Thomas Hayden Church (then credited as Thomas H. Church), perhaps best known for his voice work as Goban Toba on Falcom's TG-16 CD version of Ys Book I & II.

I'm too lazy to delete and repost that one with a better link, but here's a better link with more drawings: web.archive.org/web/20101020...

The Big Lebowski also adapts well in Golden Books format.

(From Josh Cooley's Movies R Fun!: web.archive.org/web/20101020...)
A Golden Books parody painting of The Jesus from The Big Lebowsky pointing devil horns to someone, with a goofy expression on his face and the caption below saying, "'You said it, man. Nobody #$%!$ with The Jesus,' said The Jesus." Josh Cooley's signature is in the bottom-right corner.

Have I just had bad luck with Japanese bathrooms??? 😅

What's creepy about this is his facial expression and body swaying doesn't skip a beat, he just shuts up like you pressed the B button in a game to skip the dialog audio but the character's still swaying in place, waiting for you to press the button again to move to the next dialog part.

I wrote a long article about Rieko Kodama, her career at Sega, the evolution of her company, the games she worked on (including some canceled games and/or games for which she is not credited), the status of women and working conditions in the video game industry, etc.

Counterclockwise from top left: Rieko Kodama, Alis and Lutz from Phantasy Star, Sonic in a maze, Alex Kidd and his motorbike next to Flicky on a waterfront pier, Joe Musashi and his dog near the Statue of Liberty facing a skyline, the three playable characters from Golden Axe seen from behind on the edge of a cliff, and one of the flying ships from Skies of Arcadia.

I'm not following this too closely as the book doesn't seem like my cup of tea, but what I'm seeing is really making Bitmap not look good regarding their editing standards, even setting aside the stuff with the author and whatever this apology/take-back-apology is. How did this book get through?

A Japanese-American co-worker told me before my 1st trip to carry handkerchiefs (lack of hand towels too), and that was some of the best advice.

I didn't watch that video in your OP, but I don't think I ever see people talk about the lack of soap in Japanese bathrooms, at least pre-covid. Considering Japan's reputation for cleanliness, I found this shocking, but it also explained all the handwipes in restaurants.

Followed by someone explaining the faux pas to me and then me apologizing for what felt like five solid minutes. Since then I've also taken to carrying some kind of bag with me to toss out where it's acceptable/no one can see me committing heinous social crimes.

No, it was just the usual vendors selling snacks at a large castle (I think it was Niji in Kyoto). I bought dango or something from one vendor, walked down, tossed the stick in another vendor's garbage bin, the dango lady saw it and screamed utter murder and ran over to grab my trash out of the bin.

Wow, lots of good stuff in that one, but that patched Ganon one might be my favorite! For some reason it got me thinking about what a PC Engine Zelda game would've looked like w/ that art style and the neat flourishes devs could pull off for cutscenes. (And Nintendo allowing it, of course.)

Fair warning, everyone's still figuring this stuff out, so reading up on this is not much better than figuring out how to sign up for Mastodon. At least you don't need to worry about whether a server's popular? 🤷
bauwerks.net
I didn't know until yesterday that there are finally other servers to move your Bluesky account to, in case anyone's curious to try that out in light of the mods' latest meltdown. I haven't had much luck so far, not sure if the servers are swamped.

So, you want to leave Bluesky, but you don't want to lose your community and start all over again.

Great news! You can leave without losing anything. Here's how.

Please share if you find this helpful so people don't lose their shit and go back to twt for no reason 🙏💖

While I'm at it, I learned about not tossing one's trash in another place's bins the hard way while grabbing a snack from vendors at a castle. The blood-curdling scream still haunts me to this day, I'll never make that mistake again. 😰

I saw someone claim the low adoption was UVs weren't as strong in Japan, but that was obviously BS as the sun's still bright in E/SE Asia! It's not too hard finding Japanese rock stars or other media figures sporting them b/c of the "badass" perception.

I didn't know about this unspoken rule on my first visit, but I could feel it from noticing I was one of very few people in my vicinity wearing them outdoors and on trains (prescription lenses, I'm lazy to switch).

I went to what ended up being Neil's final show in L.A. 10 years ago, so I'm good w/o catching this tour.

It's cool to see these guys reunite, but I'm a little surprised they're still going as Rush? Guess it'll depend on whether this is a final send-off for the band or testing the waters to see if they keep going w/ the band name and all the baggage that entails.

It's dawned on me that I've never read a single thing that BWS drew. These panels look amazing, it's kinda hard for me to believe a Marvel book in the mid-80s looked like this.

For no particular reason, here's the Best UK Politics Meme Ever
The final scene from Twin Peaks, Series 2, except instead of Evil Cooper it's Sir Keir Starmer, grinning & smashing his bleeding head against his image in the mirror, which instead of BOB is Tony Blair. There never was a Good Starmer and he's not in the Black Lodge, however.
