And, as Neve's 1636 A new almanack and prognostication shows (A2v), these symbols have been rather consistent in printed calendars. As you can see, the authors of these almanacs often included explanations of the symbols for their readers. Image via Folger/LUNA (image 63985; STC 490 (1636))
