This beauty will be gone soon, but she wanted to get into the fall spirit (and the sunflowers) before she leaves.

Monarch

#ColorADay #RedWed #butterflies #invertebrates #BugSky #nature #photography #autumn #FallColors
A sunlit white-spotted black butterfly with brilliant orange wings open to show off heavy black veining and black edges with more white spots perches, facing left, on the right side of a small red sunflower with a yellow center supported by a bright green stalk against a darker green background.

Beautiful, Trudy! I love the colors. 🥰

Peaking out of her hidey-hole and ready to launch into #WoodpeckerWednesday.

Red-bellied Woodpecker

#birds #nature #wildlife #photography
A tan bird with red patches at the base of her beak and on her nape and a black and white barred back sticks the front half of her body out of a hole in a standing, brown, dead tree trunk with her head lowered and turned slightly to the right of the frame as she prepares to launch. The sunshine glints off her black eye and creates a shadow of her on the trunk below.

🥳 YAY! That's such good news to see today. Thank you for the update! 🥰

Me too! I'm looking forward to our winter birds, but I'm not quite ready to let go of the summer ones. Not that I have much of a choice. 😆

Thanks, Alan! I could have done that, but I still would have been at it all day. 😄 Have a great day!

Trying to narrow down my favorite migrators is impossible, so I'm going with one that embodies both themes. I always miss the sounds of Gray Catbirds, even if they're usually yelling at me.

#BirdOfTheDay #migration #FloofBall #birds #nature #wildlife #photography
A dark gray bird with a black cap, a sparkling black eye, a short black beak, and cinnamon red undertail coverts perches on top of a bush covered in small, bright green leaves and red berries in profile facing right. It is puffed up and fluffy as it tries to soak up the sun, and, for once, its beak is closed and silent. They are very chatty birds.

How can you stand it? Wishing you all the best in that absolute hellscape.

The weather along the ocean isn't always sunshine and rainbows, but the birds never disappoint.

Black-bellied Plover

#BirdOfTheDay #SeaBirds #birds #nature #wildlife #photography
A small brownish-gray bird with a long, straight, black bill and long, black legs walks along a wet beach scattered with bits of shell and foamy bubbles left over from a recent wave in profile facing right against a gray sky. A small brown bird with a short beak, a white throat and underparts, a black necklace, and orange legs and feet walks with its right foot raised on a clear, sandy beach in profile facing left under an overcast sky. Another small bird with a black and white speckled back, snow white underparts, and a longer black beak and legs wades in very shallow water along a pebbly beach in profile facing right under an overcast sky. A bird with a dark brown and white mottled back and a black throat, belly, beak, and legs walks in short green grass in profile facing left under a, you guessed it, overcast sky.

Those brilliant blue patches shining through hint at the adult he will become and make him so pretty in his teenage phase.

Indigo Bunting

#BlueSkyMonday #birds #nature #wildlife #photography
A small, olive brown bird perches on a thin branch in profile facing right with his head turned somewhat toward the camera against a pale tan background. His feathers and black eye shimmer in the sunlight, and there are bright azure blue patches along his wing, back, and tail that peak through the brown, making him a uniquely beautiful bird. When he is an adult, his entire body will be covered in the blue feathers.

Are you searching for someone who enjoys long walks on the beach? Have I got the perfect partner for you! (Warning: may be flighty)

Whimbrel

#birds #nature #wildlife #photography #BirdOfTheDay #walks #StunDay
A speckled brown and cream bird with a thickly-striped brown and cream head, a long, thin, curved bill, and long, dark legs walks along a ridge of a grass-covered dune just in front of an old, weathered picket fence that is roughly the same height as the bird. The fences are used for erosion control and the dune has built up behind it providing a background of more grass-covered sand.

They have very nearly the same style and apparently the same tastes.

Orange Sulphur and Clouded Sulphur visiting the panicled aster

#butterflies #BugSky #invertebrates #nature #photography #SundayYellow #StunDay
A small, greenish-yellow butterfly with closed wings showing a thin, pink fringe along the outer wings, a small, bright white spot outlined in deep pink on its hindwing, and a small black spot along the upper edge of the top wing with an orange patch below the spot perches in profile facing left on a cluster of small daisy-like flowers with white petals and bright yellow centers. Another grouping of small white flowers provides the backdrop for a butterfly flying above them in the upper left corner. Its open wings are pale green-yellow with a thick black border, a short pink fringe along the outside, and a small black spot along the upper edge. Each hindwing has a pale orange spot, but there are no other orange patches to be found on this butterfly, distinguishing it from the orange sulphur.

When the hard work of belly-scratching is done, sometimes you just have to flop over and relax.

American Mink

#BlueSkyArtShow #relax #mammals #nature #wildlife #photography #autumn
A long, slinky, furry, dark-brown animal with short, round ears and a bright white chin flops on its side over the crevice created between a very thick, exposed root on the left and a hard rock on the right that it had just been using to scratch its belly. The top of its head is touching the ground in front of the root, its mouth is opened wide in a yawn showing off its sharp canine-like teeth, and one of its paws is braced on another root to hold it in place. The rear of its body is unseen on the other side of the crevice, like a cat that has turned to liquid. Usually I catch the minks while they are wet or damp from fishing, but this one is mostly dry, making it look nice and fluffy (and snuggly). The rest of the photo contains brown, fallen leaves and a thick, fallen branch that is partially covering the rock.
