Redear sunfish look similar to a couple of familiar sunfish: the bluegill + pumpkinseed.

How to tell these cousins apart? Bluegill lack the redear’s orange spot on the black ear flap, while pumpkinseeds share the orange ear flap spot but have wavy bluish lines on their cheeks #25DaysofFishmas

The Nutcracker? Psh, I prefer The Shellcracker!

Other common names for the redear sunfish include “shellcracker” (from the specialized teeth in their throat that enable them to crush the shells of snails + mussels) and “stumpknocker” (from their tendency to congregate around logs) #25DaysofFishmas

Kept mumbling "do not perceive me" as I was scooping the clumps of salty snow piled up where the sidewalks met intersections

The Christmas darter is one of ~200 species of darters (fish in a group called Etheostomatinae) that are all native to North America + mostly found east of the Rocky Mountains. Christmas darters are Tiny Tims, typically only growing <2 in (5 cm) long #25DaysofFishmas

I keep delaying getting my own snow blower because we rarely get big snows so it isn't practical to have one...but the big snows we do get also come with wind and cold that make shoveling it just the worst.

At least the 32 degrees out heavy, wet snow I can get rid of in a jacket. Not this one.

Update: they did the sidewalks across the street but the machine they used was so loud I thought it was passing by just outside...

I sweat much more than the average person which is great in summer but makes me totally miserable in winter

It was the first shirt I ever bought that was an "extra long" that made me go "oh, that's too long" (and I can rarely find thrift shop clothes with sleeves long enough that I don't reflexively roll them up to hide how short they are on me) so anyone with a 6'6" wingspan would be happy
