Beaufort County honored Juneteenth last weekend at Ma Daisy's Porch and Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park, and yesterday at Penn Center.

On June 19, 1865, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation, enslaved people in Galveston, Texas finally received word that they were free. Juneteenth reminds us that freedom was delayed — and that the struggle for true equity and equality continues.
