The over-representation of crime news affects us all. For folks who see this stuff it leads to "mean world syndrome" where we think the world is a worse place than it is and folks who think the world is a scary place are more likely to give power to authoritarians who promise safety.
Hugely important topic in media criticism

Via @brianstelter.bsky.social: The Financial Times recently dubbed it "the great crime paradox:" Violent crime rates are falling, both in the US and the UK, "but a growing share of people think levels are rising."

Step 1: Send ICE into blue states to arrest people. Send them to prison camps in red states.

Step 2: Arrest very few people in red states.

Step 3: Create a new unconstitutional census using magic math showing fewer people in blue states and more people in red states.

Odd, how South Park is covering Kristi Noem and her ICE hooligans more accurately than The New York Times.

Every other post in conservative media right now is about Sydney Sweeney. You can smell the desperation on them.

They don’t want to talk about inflation, the Epstein cover-up, or how Trump’s created the worst job market since he was last in office.

Safety regulations are written in blood
As a historian of injuries and product safety, this one feels personal.

The CPSC can’t do its job without independent commissioners.

Let’s review some of the cases that led to the establishment of the agency in the first place:
Supreme Court allows Trump to fire members of product safety agency
A judge had reinstated three members of the Consumer Product Safety Commission, a federal agency set up by Congress to be independent of political pressure.

As California goes, so goes the nation.
This is the most straightforward thing they've said so far. They're using the military to "liberate" Los Angeles from its mayor and governor.
Kristi Noem: "We are not going away. We are staying here to liberate the city from the socialists and the burdensome leadership that this governor and that this mayor have placed on this country and what they have tried to insert into the city."

Sen. Alex Padilla is then forcibly removed!

"Liberate the city"

What does that mean?

The Trump Administration should be asked by every reporter.
Kristi Noem: "We are not going away. We are staying here to liberate the city from the socialists and the burdensome leadership that this governor and that this mayor have placed on this country and what they have tried to insert into the city."

There's never a savior. We're in this mess because we don't understand that self-governance takes effort. We've been careless with our freedom and too willing to give it up. Shall we despair or shall we try our best to get it back?

The protests in Romania in 1989, in Ukraine in 2014...
Were mostly leaderless.
So are the protests in Serbia right now.
You do not need leaders, you need communicators most of all. Explain to the fence sitters who stayed at home in 2024 that the monster is going to eventually come for them all.

My first day on campus I felt like a Wal-Mart kid on rodeo drive. But @Yale quickly became my second home and the Afro American Cultural Center my safe space.

Tonight, I was honored to receive a “Legacy Award” at the 55th Anniversary of the House at Yale. Grateful to be a part of the legacy.

📣 100+ town halls in GOP turf — with House & Senate Dems leading the charge.

✅ Special election wins — From NE to SC, we’re winning and overperforming.

But somehow folks stay obsessed with drama in safe blue primaries and miss the actual work being done.

We don’t have time for the foolishness.

The Big Fucked Up Bill, is NOT a spending bill.

It’s a government restructuring bill, that consolidates power in the executive, defunds critical services to the point of absurdity, removes the power of our courts to enforce the law and dramatically curtails voting rights.

It’s Project 2025

Law enforcement officers should never cover their faces when making arrests or conceal their identities (unless they are working undercover). They work for us. We have a right to know who they are. These face coverings are frightening & unAmerican, as though they're ashamed of what they're doing.
