It was described to me like sieving flour over a shape and working out what the shape was by how and where the flour has landed and its "shadows".

I did work at Daresbury Synchrotron many years ago, and there were models of DNA everywhere as were posters bigging her up.
It's mind blowing her contribution, and how that bit of science actually works.

The story* goes they worked out its structure and had a large model made of it. They covered it over and wheeled it out in front of a waiting world at a press conference. When the time was right they whisked off the cover and shouted.......

"DNAAAAAAAAA!"
