It’s so noticeable when you compare TV news coverage. The news should be scary and serious. Today’s breezy tone is all wrong. Watch a 1970s episode of Newsround and it - seriously - addresses the audience in a more adult fashion then the main news does now.
Again, I would advise people to go read the media from 50 years ago. Sure, there was absolutely an awkward stiffness that the death of deference got rid of and I prefer it but they talked to you like adults in a way that very few newspapers do today.
I don't think it's all of it by any measure but I do absolutely believe that the political media's raging anti-intellectual streak has got worse with time and has ended up influencing the way MPs talk, and what they choose to talk/think about

Oh, the temptation to write in and suggest another topic for Moore Moments: “in a moving conversation with herself, Hannah Ingram-Moore explores why no-one just fucks off out of public life in disgrace any more.”

This is probably true, and arguably has one of its worst manifestations in Ed Miliband’s online output, which ought to be considered career-endingly cringe-inducing for a senior politician, but which is illustrative of where we are now.

I don’t think this is a “politicians have got dumber” issue for the most part. If you look at the *actual CVs* of previous cohorts of MPs, their background is not radically different when you account for, you know, the fact the economy is different! It is primarily a media and ecosystem issue.

So, my home town is having a meltdown on social media because a 50 year old brick and concrete bus shelter is being taken down to make way for a modern replacement.

Facebook posts commenced. Several a day on the Community pages.

An online petition was started.

And now... This.

Hong Kong fire and Grenfell are just alike. Fire spreading through unsafe building materials installed due to penny-pinching, killing dozens. One difference: before the HK fire is even out three executives at contractors have been arrested, eight years after Grenfell no-one has been arrested.

The (obvious in advance) limits of the government's strategy since it took office: a budget in which the majority of individual items poll well, yet people think it is the most unfair budget since YouGov started polling on this question.

Difficult to square the fact that without the UKs independent (or in reality, very much not independent) nuclear deterrent, we would be a small player in even European defence - even more so now Germany is investing hundreds of billions in its manufacturing might for defence.
Btw I don't think it is good that UK voters and governments from both ex-main parties seem to care less and less about the effective practice of the military way rather than pantomime militarism.

But many need to stop kidding themselves about the state of UK defence politics
