Benkyo Box is out for Mac 🚀

It's a native #Mac study app with plenty of features to study, import, organize and clear your study queue. apple.co/42QuGt6

Known bugs (fixes in Apple review):
- Some cards are not included when exporting using drag/drop
- State restoration breaks selection in calendar
A promo image of Benkyo Box for Mac.

It has an import window with questions and answers for the fictional role-playing show "Fire in the Role". It has a study view with a Pomeranian picture and the answer "Pomeranian". In the back of these windows there's a Library window with the current progress and a Computer History Museum folder selected.

We are proud of our Liquid Glass update, now available in the AppStore 🚀. And as always, hold on tight for the Mac update, coming soon!

A screenshot of 3 versions of Benkyo Box, for iPad, Mac and iPhone. They all show the main interface, with a Today View with your progress. iPad and Mac selected the Computer History Museum folder, with a card for the IBM 1401 computer selected. A badge for Mac Coming Soon is attached to the Mac. The top says "Capture and learn what matters to you, now in Liquid Glass"

💻 An early beta of Benkyo Box for macOS (1.5.0) is available for beta testing - lots of kinks to iron out but it’s starting to take shape! Feel free to download it in TestFlight:
testflight.apple.com/join/jZXFDA46

It’s more solid in macOS 26, less so in 15, but we’ll get there.

Our developer took a short vacation, took notes in the #ComputerHistoryMuseum, then realized we didn't have an obvious feature: a notification badge with the number of remaining studies. Notification badges available in the upcoming 1.4.5 release (in review) 🔔

1.5.0 is out in beta with the new #liquidglass ui. Enjoy!

It’s still with the old icon due to some last minute issues, but a new one should be coming in a later beta.

Quick preview of Benkyo Box Mac version (pre-Tahoe). We customized the Study View specifically for Mac using trackpad gestures and plain ol' buttons.

It's unfortunate that #SwiftUI doesn't have a "trackpad pan gesture". DragGesture is the closest, but requires clicking to drag. Made this one with an overlay for #BenkyoBox study view (shown here in pre-Tahoe UI).

1.4.1 is out! some highlights:
1. You can see each card's progress when viewing a card.
2. Theme color previews in Settings
3. Study button is easier to tap

And from 1.4.0:
1. Long cards scroll in the study view
2. More flexible column selection in CSV import
3. Faster startup time

Some of you import #flashcards from CSVs that have more than 1 column that is relevant to the question/answer, for example: The hiragana in one column, definition in the other. Next update will allow you to select more than 1 column (see the video to see how it works). #BenkyoBox

I am aware that 1.3.2 broke image annotation creation. 1.3.3 is in review with a fix. Sorry for that!

Took a break from our upcoming liquid glass 🫧 and macOS update to ship a few fixes in 1.3.2:
1. Home Screen Stats widget now correctly updates
2. The study scoring control has been refined to be easier to interact with
3. Lists are more data dense
4. Other smaller refinements

A small quality of life improvement coming up

Noticed that people get confused and frustrated when they slide inside the gauge arc, and it doenst work. So l extended the gauge segments with some hidden shapes, shown here with debug backgrounds. Claude was super helpful for drawing the pie shapes.

A preview of image annotation flashcards on macOS. It's taken a little more time than expected, but it's starting to take shape! #flashcards #edutech
ancientbuho.bsky.social
Making a bit of progress on annotation flashcards. Fields are smaller and have translucency on macOS. I had to rewrite all the SwiftUI code in the editor to AppKit because NSHostingView and NSScrollView don't play well together, and SwiftUI scroll view doesn't zoom. #BenkyoBox #flashcards #edutech

🐞New bug fix release is out (1.3.1): Improves performance of creating and resizing annotation #flashcards. It also fixes a bug that prevented them from being resized. Annotations now also move to the top when selected.

These are improvements for the upcoming macOS app that the iOS version received.
a picture of tools used for learning tool names. Various tools are labeled with their names, like "caliper", "Allen wrench", "chain tool" and "cassette wrench". The name of the app is on the middle top, "Benkyo Box". Below it, it says "Annotate your pictures to memorize".

🔊 The next version will be packed with audio to make everything feel more alive. The sounds come in subtle but satisfying themes that you can choose from. Also: custom notification sounds 🔔 (do turn up the volume a bit in this recording to hear it). #benkyobox #apps #flashcards

Some of you like the flashcard score control going from left to right, others like it right to left. I like left to right, but I'll let you pick your favorite in the next release 😊

The text editors in the #mac version of #BenkyoBox are starting to take shape. You can edit simple cards, embed images, swap questions and answers, etc

Porting some of the UIKit editor code (embedded in SwiftUI) to AppKit was made easier with @massicotte.org 's github.com/ChimeHQ/Glyph

Mac development update: I finally can run on Mac (not as a "designed for iPad / Catalyst" app). A lot will have to be rewritten natively for Mac, but it'll be worth it in the end. #BenkyoBox

1.2.2 is available now with new languages, optimized app size, and shorter study sessions by default, so that you can finish your sessions more quickly.

Afterwards, our focus is finishing the Mac app, and other polishing releases while that bakes.
