Engineering can be so much better than this and more than this. It's absurd how much we're resigned to this entire area of human work being held hostage by this kind of culture.

Reminds me of the time I went to a friend’s aunt’s house to celebrate Passover with her family, and when they asked if I knew the story of Passover, I recounted it for them. They asked how I knew so much about it, and I was honest. “Nickelodeon ran a Rugrats Passover episode every year.”

"Alexa," He says into the void where once his friendships were. "Remind me... remind me that I'm a winner?"
The pause is brief but brutal, a gasp of silence as his whole self-worth teeters.
"You are so goated." She replies.
"I am. I am goated, ain't I?"
This time there is no answer. There never is.

My phone has full optical character recognition of 47,000 photos. I can search individual words.

I cannot search three words in quotes.

Computers used to be powerful. That power meant something. It was power for making your life better in sovereignty to your own interests.

And now we have this.

I wholeheartedly share this view with @anildash.com — although on platforms like LinkedIn it definitely can feel otherwise. www.anildash.com/2025/10/17/t...

My biggest issue with the pervasive AI propaganda is the assertion of the inevitability of a AGI w/o provable evidence.

I was so excited by the work Lina was doing with Apple Silicon. A community being hostile enough to cause her to completely distance herself should really take a look in the mirror and figure out what needs to change.
I have learned that Luna has joined the Freedesktop Discord. People expressed feeling unsafe, but the admin shut down discussion immediately.

Luna has been sharing screenshots where an unknown FDo CoC team member discusses banning me with her, and states that they have "a plan" [to deal with me].

I do not claim to know why we are on this planet, but I am very certain we are not born to start a mission where we optimize every single little thing in our lives.

I think it's just not good for the spirit.

OK, having heard a report on some AI bracelet which is always recording audio with the idea that you could go back and audit your day's interactions or ask it questions about what you did that day...

look if you actually want this I think you're forgetting what it means to be human.

It’s really funny because of course “surely the prior engineers solved this in a systematic and generalizable way” [opens box] *a RATATOUILLE rat is frantically puppeteerting worse spaghetti code than you have ever seen, it briefly pauses to flip you the bird* is the archetypal engineer experience.

When you hear about Big Tech companies lobbying the federal government to stifle AI regulation in the states, this is one reason why.
California has now banned algorithmic price fixing.

The state has outlawed the practice of landlords colluding to raise prices using rental software and AI.

This is a huge victory for renters in the biggest state in the country.
