Everyday 1950s #Bergen shot. Not sure what the barricades are for.

A black and white photo of a 1950s Bergen cityscape. Striped wooden(?) barricades block the road, but a man, a kid on a tricycle and a woman is walking between them. A bus in the background.

Picture yourself as the "umarell", the guy looking at the USS Skate with his hands behind his back.

Considering my last #submarine was the all-time most liked image of this channel, here is another one! This one, a bit later, but it does actually have a […]

The Nordnes-Torvet #tram in Strandgaten in 1927. Fourth of four lines at that time, which – at slightly different route stops – ran from 1915 to 1944. Behind it is the second line, that ran to Haukeland hospital, outside the city centre.

World War II and the […]

The #submarine Nautilus left #Bergen in early August 1931, drawing crowds of locals who watched the refurbished US military submarine steam toward the open sea, on a voyage to #svalbard with goal up going under the North pole ice to #alaska.

The crew – […]

Oh no! I just found out that I missed the 106th anniversary of the Norwegian Canned Food Manufacturers Association General Meeting in Bergen in 1919.

Sorry, it won't happen again!

They gathered on a trip to #Fløistuen on the top of Mount Fløyen, which since […]

Almost the same position as yesterdays image, but around 40 years earlier – 1910.

The Monclair House, while it was the municipal #Bergen school where women were taught the duties of house keeping, and not shaded by a large bridge like it would be some […]

Look how close those support columns are to the walls!

When the Puddefjord #bridge was done in 1956, it kept one of its neighbours very close. The Monclair house, for some weird reason also called "the house under the bridge", still stands here, as it has […]

If you were in need of a washing machine or a fridge in 1955, you could do worse than Roald Carlsen A/S. They had a store in Nygårdsgaten, on the corner towards where Grieghallen would later be built. This, I think, is some form of trade fair.

If you want to travel in style, you have to book tickets in style. And around 1931, there was no place better than at the #Bergen #Train station traveller's office!

No, these women are not showing off a hairy alien baby. Likely – at least according to the metadata – it's a dog that won't stay still enough for 1910 shutter speeds to capture.

Since 1894, an electrical boat named #beffen has been scooting across the Vågen bay in the city center of #Bergen. Here it is in the early 00s, 1900s, that is, with Bergenhus Fortress in the background.

In a library mood.

Here are some 60s photos to put some broth in your Tuesday soup. The University Library building (today, the humanities library) was done in 1961, and students flocked to it for silence, comfort, and space to study, read, and whatever […]

The little #Train that could. Until it couldn't – specifically on the day this photo was taken, the last day of the Nesttun-Os Line in 1935.

The trolleybus – buses running on overhead power lines – has been a staple of the #Bergen cityscape since 1950, with its latest update in 2020 with in-motion charging for battery buses.
