I have a side passion for interwar Everest range but other than that I've resisted that era, or disposed of it along the way (grandma lived near Poole so we had a LOT of the floral ones!)

I craved one of these (from a shop! branded! in a box!) but predictably had to settle for a wooden Sylko cotton reel with four tacks knocked in by dad

The resulting product used to hang around in coils like a sullen woollen worm until someone (often me) threw it in the bin

I was a 16y/o English girl version of those guys

On that trip I also saw ball lightning bouncing off the wall of a Leningrad tower block, don't *think* the CDM was a factor

Anyway, as a first trip abroad, not bad going

Still wear my Party Congress badge bought for 2 roubles on the street

Badge from the 1981 26th Congress of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, now worn by middle aged UK woman as general "up yours" to polite society

Well, quite. Would love to go back, not least because that was a school trip and now I'm older and possibly less stupid but I am resigned to it not happening

(It was my first and last brush with creme de menthe which was incredibly cheap for some reason. USSR production target overshot, maybe)

Saw him in 1981, at which time there were rumours that he'd started to crumble but he looked chipper enough to me

And this is why I only do plain top down st-st raglan jumpers in the round - because you count once when you cast on, once when you divide for sleeves and that's IT, totally brain-free

Although I do have lots of sock-sized oddments 🤔

We had a 5 digit until we moved to civilization 3 years ago... The original 3 digits plus the 1970s 2 digit addition

It confused the hell out of online forms but you could add any digit on the end, so effectively all the houses there had (and still have) 10 useable numbers

In the days when you had to talk to the lady at the exchange to get her to connect you, 4 digits. I found that a terrifying task as a kid because I was never sure if I had to tell her my number (2366) or grandma's (2041)

Codes arrived about 1972 in our bit of the world, to much consternation
