On July 13th 1889, France experienced a full moon according to astronomical calculations. This full moon was notable as it was partially eclipsed and may have appeared orange or coppery as it rose.

I love this quote Vincent writes in the same letter: Let’s not forget that small emotions are the great captains of our lives, and that these we obey without knowing it.

Letter 14/07/1889 from Vincent to Theo
I have one on the go of a moonrise over the same field as the croquis in the Gauguin letter, but in which stacks replace the wheat. It’s dull ochre-yellow and violet. Anyway, you’ll see in a while from now.

To Willemien van Gogh he wrote on 9 or 10 December 1889, "And the garden too, with its espalier mulberry tree. As regards mulberry trees, there are a lot here. I painted one not long ago when its bushy foliage was a magnificent yellow against a very blue sky and a white, stony, sunlit field behind."

" I’ll tell you that we’re having some superb autumn days, and that I’m taking advantage of them. I have a few studies, among others a mulberry tree, all yellow on stony ground standing out against the blue of the sky, in which study I think that you’ll see that I’ve found Monticelli’s track."
