I am overjoyed that millions of people were able to see auroras for the first time in 2024. I saw plenty in my youth, from Lat. 45 N. Over 50 years ago. But the sun has been relatively quiet for several decades, so someone under age 40 hasn't had many chances to see them esp. from mid-latitudes.

A photo I took of the total eclipse of 21 Aug. 2017. From the panhandle of Nebraska. I just realized I was at about the same longitude as I was for the other total eclipse I've seen, which was near Williston, ND in 1979.

Here's one of my astronomical photos, the moon about to occult Venus, Dec. 2015. Hand held camera, 200mm focal length. Did you know: Venus is visible with the naked eye during daytime fairly often, w/ very clear skies and Venus near greatest elongation from the sun. Our moon can be a finding aid
