Here's a few more shots showing the front door and some finer details. I'm not totally done with furnishing the briefing room but it's still cool to see through the window. I'll use these spaces for several pages so I'll get as much value as possible. #mecha #b3d #art

I'm finally happy with the Spellbinder hanger! This will probably be the only indoor environment I make for the rulebook. I'll finish the briefing room and Major's office later. So nice to finally have something I can post. I'll make some NPCs eventually, maybe a combat scene next. #mecha #b3d #art

I've spent dozens of hours working on this hanger, but I can't get it feel right. There's so much empty and flat wall space and I have no idea what I can do with it. Reducing the size of the room is an option, but doesn't solve anything fundamentally.
Its depressing.

Started blocking out the hanger's briefing / common room. I'm not interested in creating spaces at such a small scale, but the rulebook outline calls for renders of pilots so I guess I gotta.

Experimented with texture nodes again, these are the most interesting results. Nodes vs texture files is a fun dynamic. I'm gonna stick with nodes for the alien aircraft. Dunno what colors or patterns I'll commit to but this is a good foundation.
The blue + yellow patterns make me think of wipeout.

Brainstorming potential materials for the alien aircraft. My main inspiration for their shapes is the Delphinus series from Ace Combat 3, but I can't use the same livery because the Dove initiative already uses white + bright colors.
I like the two leftmost ones the most, dazzle is interesting too.

Worked on the Oopart's wings and aft end. Still not ideal but this is how it should have been from the start. Gotta finish this hanger so I can move on to something else. Human scale environments are exhausting to plan and model.

Spent some time modeling this assortment of greebles to fill out the hanger and other similar spaces. I dunno what any most of these are exactly but that doesn't matter, just detail objects.
I enjoy modeling far more than materials So I'll lean of objects rather than materials from now on.

Spending the afternoon peace keeping on the back porch. My cat Monty (left) is mad that another cat (right) is hanging out in the yard. Already had to physically hold him back once so now I'm sitting between them. The yellow cat is small and friendly and I don't want Monty to hurt him.

Last night I decided I didn't like this anymore lol. Totally redid the walls and ceiling and removed the volumetric fog. Feels much cleaner and warmer now. I'm still fine tuning the colors and implementing small greebles here and there.

I'm nearing the finish line on the Spellbinder hanger. The briefing room won't be done for a while so I stuck a png through the window to hold it's place. Gotta get some more color involved and vary up the gray tones. The Augurs have a few too many weapons equipped, I'll personalize them later.

I ended up using a particle system for the contrail. Its not perfect but its the best I can do while the particles are still volumes. I've been tweaking and re-rending this for almost three hours so gotta put down now lol. This is still just just a test render.

I'm focused on learning more about clouds and volumes in blender right now. The thick flat cloud layer looks good, but I need more practice and a better technique for contrails.
Ideally it won't have a noticeable shadow and will gradually disperse.

I've been trapped in the depression cube for a while. made some more progress on the new hanger. Scrolling and posting isn't fun anymore.

Blocking out a new hanger. Its mostly inspired by Boomerang Squadron's hanger in the Yukikaze OVA but I have some other references too. I need to make several large-scale environments in blender to have all the renders I need for the rulebook so I'm still pondering that.

I've been working on new scene few days.
I wanted to depict hunks of mountainous terrain suspended over empty abyss resembling a clear sky. But I'm not there yet lol. The volume I used for contrails won't work for clouds and despite drawing my own height maps the rock is way too smooth. 🐸😠

I spent some more time with this idea and now I think it looks alright. Dunno if I'll do anything with it. "Good Luck, Sundogs" is a reference to the Yukikaze book series, it's not the game's actual title.

If you compare Touhou 20's backgrounds to those of Riverbed Soul Saver and Infinite Blade Pavilion (fangames from 2014 and 2019) I see an obvious deficit.
I'll try to be nice and mention I though the pictured trees and stars looked alright, but that pyramid really sucks. 3/4
