I failed to book tickets for Notre Dame the day previous to our planned visit, and I began to despair. However, some more timeslots became available via the app in the morning. And, on arrival, the non-ticket queues were long, but were moving quite steadily anyway (this was a weekday in early Sept)

I guess that you could assess a random sample across the collections? But even that would still be a massive undertaking, especially for something perhaps incidental to your main lines of enquiry.

Libraries often conduct condition assessments, e.g. to inform conservation activities, but I guess that you would need to devise something specific for your research. Some alternative approaches are described in Duran-Casablancas, et al., 2019: doi.org/10.1186/s404...
