We had this in UK with Brexit. 'Experts' (people who understood the issues) said it would be terrible and gave reasons why. This was ridiculed, dismissed and termed 'project fear' by those in favour of leaving the EU.

We left the EU and now know that the 'experts' predictions were largely correct.
