Here you’ll find words, works of art…
and bonsai of all sizes
(Except it won’t just be about small trees 😆)
The #bonsai will need pruning come spring 🌱
The grasses that we grow for use in #kusamono or #accentplants will be tidied up then; for now we’re enjoying the winter mood. (That’s a smallish #Oak bonsai photobombing on the left.)

Well hello, it’s been a while…

Winter greetings from the #hellebores in this slightly soggy corner of my #garden

Summer this year wasn’t really brilliant for our #Satsuki Azaleas: mostly they either flowered too early or too late.
Oh well. I did manage some decent pics but not as many as in previous years.
(Sorry, can’t remember the variety names 🥺) 🌱

😱 Time has flown by! Can’t believe how busy things have been; it’s been a while since I last popped in 😭
Hope I can make up for this with a pic of a native 🐝 checking out how I’m pruning this #bonsai Satsuki Azalea 🌱

Spring is definitely here; the Blackthorn (Prunus spinosa) #bonsai in the garden are in flower
The pics are 2 weeks apart—what a difference in leaf growth 🌱

Soldanella (with blue flowers) + Ophioglossum in a deep pot, first put together many years ago as a #Kusamono planting.
The Ophioglossum has taken over, and it’s now due a #repot. Think I’ll change the pot as well.
2nd pic was taken 2 weeks earlier: lots of growth since! 🌱

Last day of February is another rainy day, but I’ve spotted my first #bumblebee of the year on this Fuji cherry (Prunus incisa) 🌱
It’s rather a small one so my guess is it might be the native Early bumblebee (Bombus pratorum).

Whenever we have a shrub/bonsai we like, we always take cuttings, even if we’re not 100% successful.
This red-orange flowered Japanese #Quince (Chojubai) is one such cutting taken many, many years back.
The original plant is long gone😢, but we have several #bonsai (in training) from it 🌱

#Cyclamen coum update: four (or so) weeks later, and there are now loads more flowers than we’ve ever seen in the past years.
Also: moss.
And we still haven’t cleared up the fallen leaves from the winter 😆 which are utterly everywhere 🌱

Cyclamen coum has finally started flowering 🌱
January 27, 2024 at 8:04 PM
Iris reticulata ‘Frozen Planet’ starting to flower
We don’t have a lot of success when planting the straight in the ground, so we start the bulbs off in pots now (then forget to plant them in the flower beds😆) 🌱

Winter Cyclamen coum is just coming into flower, while its next-door Ivy neighbour seems to be taking a wander...
...and the moss is indiscreetly taking over, as it does 🌱
(Should we just ignore that honking bit of wire I was too distracted/lazy to cut off 😆)

Am I a bonus, or not a bonus? The waning light of winter dusk would like to know...
Not that this Campanula would seem to care, being in such a sheltered spot 🌱
January 16, 2024 at 2:24 AM
Even without any flowers, the 🌱leaves of this #Cyclamen have a lot going for them.
Love the leaf edges, the green on green texture, and the contrast with those dark stems 😍

A lot of rain here with just a bit of winter chill, but also a time to relax with our loved ones.
Wishing you all a happy Holiday Season 🌱

And some teensy tiny ones (the OH really likes those). The intention is that they will get used, when the right plant comes along…but we probs need to be retired to have enough time for all intentions to get fulfilled! 😆

Here’s a couple of shohin pots by one of our fave potters, Walsall Studio Ceramics:

A small cyclamen accent plant (Shitakusa), pic taken in winter 2020.
We collect very small, handmade accent pots — the smaller the better!👌
This pot is about 1 in / 2.5 cm tall, and a little under 2in / 5 cm at the rim.

Can my first post be a non-bonsai? Like a majestic English oak (Quercus robur) in a friend’s garden.
I do have a couple of bonsai oaks as well 😉

Still skirting that bonsai issue with a black & white painting for use on a hanging scroll in bonsai display.
Theme is a winter landscape
December 12, 2023 at 4:24 PM
Definitely *not* a bonsai but it *is* a (Japanese) bonsai pot.
Just couldn’t ever find a tree or a Kusamono (herbaceous planting) to put into it. So it’s parked indoors in the front room, in the warm, away from marauding squirrels and the robin who has staked its claim on the garden.
December 12, 2023 at 4:01 PM
Still not a bonsai!! (I’m on a roll here since nobody’s going to call me out 😂)
Another accent plant/shitakusa, this time in early spring: Primula ‘Wanda’ in front of a Walsall pot.
December 12, 2023 at 3:32 PM
Second one from that same show in January 2019: also not a bonsai 😂
Accent plant (shitakusa) is a Selaginella; behind it is another (even heavier) Saikei
December 12, 2023 at 3:25 PM
First of my bonsai pics isn’t technically a bonsai 😆…it’s a Saikei planting (ie focusing on the landscape scene rather than the style of the tree) - Winter image, 2019.
This one’s difficult to carry around because the pot is so long. There are 3 big rocks (ie mountains) in there as well.
