I finished Induction by @syntaxtakes.bsky.social the other night and have been so chomping at the bit to tell people about it that I wrote what amounts to both a pitch and a review that I keep dropping places I can figure out how to drop a post this big without being an asshole. Have a screenshot:
Induction by Syntax Takes, first published book set in the Korps Universe, was incredible. It was a bit harrowing at times, being a scenario built around some of my worst nightmares, but ultimately being about getting out of that situation and choosing to live for your own happiness despite your trauma and to spite the people responsible for that trauma who sought to control you. Induction centers around Volta, an aspiring superhero with electrical powers training under the Texas Protectorate Assembly in what amounts to a military bootcamp with some accommodation for supers. She's also the child of rich, deeply conservative, highly controlling parents, who would sooner send her to conversion therapy than disown her if they caught on that "their son" still "thinks he's a girl". Enter Carmen Raynes, new researcher for the TPA and, unbeknownst to either the TPA or Volta, an undercover agent of the supervillain organization The Korps--known for allegedly kidnapping and brainwashing young people into becoming mindless drones to advance their violent anarcho-communist agenda, turning them into perverted queers and transsexual whores--who takes a special interest in Volta... One potential criticism I could see of the work that I had to debate myself on is that its sociopolitical messaging is pretty on-the-nose and in-your-face--the fact that one of the characters makes a joke directly referencing the quote from Garth Marenghi, "I know writers who use subtext and they're all cowards," hardly seems incidental. But ultimately? I thought it was refreshing as fuck. Trans and queer narratives, narratives hostile to the real life status quo we live under right now, are so often relegated to subtext because they wouldn't be allowed to exist otherwise. This one just blatantly says the "good guys", from cops to superheroes, are at best useful idiots for an evil, oppressive system, and more or less ends on the note of, "Fuck yeah, you're a supervillain now!" And it's fucking great.
