How much time is research vs. teaching vs. service? Do they have friends? Are they happy? Would you be happy in that role?

Start dreaming of the life you want after grad school. Be clear about what (R1, R2, SLAC, alt-academia), where, and with whom you'd like to work -- and what/where/with whom you really DON'T want to be. This will prevent you from applying to a bunch of jobs you don't actually want!
