@amydain.bsky.social gives a good overview of the housing permit data landscape in Massachusetts. Data collection through standard permits is minimal and Census sources leave much to be desired. Kindly cites the work I do at MAPC. Lots of work to be done!
And as she explains in the newest edition of Upzone Update—"The Surprising Lack of Good Permitting Data and What to Do about It” buff.ly/2fh6B3K —while counting permits should be easy, the process can feel like counting grains of sand. Concrete numbers keep slipping through your fingers.

Minneapolis built more housing than any other major Midwest city & it’s not a mystery why.
They allowed modest density housing types city-wide, cut regressive parking mandates, and made it easier to build apartments near transit.
The results: more homes + slowed rent growth.
