My photo collage shows a selection of bishop and warder chess pieces finely carved from creamish-coloured walrus ivory, dated c. 1150-1200 AD. Found in a large gaming hoard on the Isle of Lewis. The bearded warder wears a long pleated garment and a conical helmet with neck and ear-pieces. He’s armed with a sword and kite-shaped shield inscribed with a lozenge shaped cross. A thing I love about Stranger Things is a sort of... ambiguity that the analogue 80s creates. You couldn't set it in another time; the crackle of TV static, radios & electricity is crucial. The tension between known & unknown.

It makes me think of these quotes by Itoi, creator of Earthbound

Put an unusual way, I think that ambiguous world is like the Otherworld. We live in this world that we think is the real one, so if something from over there enters here, this world becomes unstable. That is at times frightening, at times thrilling. Iwata: Ahh, the boundaries break down. We can relax only when there are proper boundary lines. Itoi: Right, right. People long ago always existed in an unstable world. In other words, to people in the time of the Tale of Genji, there really were ghosts. Itoi: Takaaki Yoshimoto says that, a long time ago, things were comprehended far less clearly, and that many things were not clearly delineated. With regard to questions like whether gods or ghosts existed, we can never relate to people in the past as long as we try to apply modern thinking. Rather, they must have existed in a more ambiguous frame of mind, he said. For example, if you're walking down the street at night and you feel like you hear someone following you, someone today would just think it was his or her imagination, but people in the Heian Period, couldn't be sure of that. Iwata: I see. It was unclear. Itoi: If you thought you saw something, you might think it was a ghost, and of course you might just think it was your imagination. Long ago, there was more of a gradation to such things. I think there was more traffic between the Otherworld and this world then. As a remnant of the mindset of those times, that feeling of ambiguity essentially remains, and regardless of the time, people applaud people and things that appear who show us the ambiguity of boundaries. Like art before perspective had been mastered or ghosts appearing in stories as if it were nothing special. Itoi: That isn't anything particularly special. The double structure of Avatar is the same, and The Sixth Sense and Poppoya are like that. That's one pivotal element of entertainment, and these few years, the number of works featuring it has increased, and it's a genre whose adherents are slowly increasing in number. To pull in yet another area of thought, I think one of the reasons that such works are increasing each year is that academic fields in modern science that treat of epistemology are still young and not yet fully established. Everyone has an almost physical reluctance to plunge down that path. It's interesting to think that people are trying so hard to recapture that fading ambiguity. Iwata: That fogginess that was a matter of course in the past exists at the boundary between the real world and the one within the screen. Itoi: Yes. You can sense that, which is peculiarly pleasing. For example, the boundaries between fiction and nonfiction and fantasy and documentary were once all vague.

Tumblr user nocryptographer: I talked with someone who works in book publishing, and they mentioned they get a lot of AI slop these days. I asked how they know what's human-written, and they said that there's one thing that will reveal AI slop without error, and that's the author not knowing their own creation. A real author can talk about their story for hours. They love to elaborate every character, every twist, every detail. Because those existed in their head long before they ever made it to the paper. They were loved before they were written. AI slop wasn't. It was just vomited into existence. Someone who generates their story with AI will never bond with their story the way real writers do. That's why they may not know what to say when they're asked why did the character do this, or even remember the scene in the first place. It's something they read, not something they wrote. And to a writer, those are not the same. There's a unique bond between the creator and the creation. If your writing doesn't come of you, you'll always lack that. I keep hearing soon we won't be able to tell. And perhaps, in a superficial sense, that's true. But there is a difference. It's not em dashes or repeated words. It's whether the story was made by someone who loves it and cares about it. If the writer's eyes light up when asked why did the character do that? and they start their very own Ted Talk about that specific scene... then it's real.
