Hi all. I'm the bumbling biochemist, on a mission to make biochemistry and chemistry fun and accessible for all. I have a blog & YouTube with a lot of content that can hopefully help people, especially biochemists-in-training. Hope it helps! thebumblingbiochemist.com

I love how my students, just like I did as a student, are falling in love with protein purification! And, they’re wanting to help others learn by starring in tutorial videos!

Today, I got to teach Korina about good chromatography column storage protocol.

Teaching undergraduates protein biochemistry is an immense privilege. Especially with this group of students!

We keep our AKTA (FPLC machine for protein chromatography to purify proteins) in a deli fridge to protect the precious proteins we’re purifying! But it’s important to know that at temperatures that are low, you typically need to reduce your flow, so your runs will go slow! youtu.be/sTPyK0fF-Ys

A “Quick Start Guide” for starting off in research with good habits

Some things I recommend you do/learn/etc. as early as possible in your training…

Someone had been asking about resources for starting researchers, so I thought I'd share this quick start guide to starting research with good habits. I updated it today to make sure it had the newest links and added a couple things. Hope it can help someone!

Priming your pumps on an AKTA is important for removing air from them that can damage your system and mess up your chromatography run!

Label your lids! One of the key lab tips I try to drill into my trainees: label the caps of tubes and bottles and all sides of boxes (and include date and initials) youtube.com/shorts/yjwkJ...

I love getting to teach my students fun lab tricks. Today, 80% glycerol! The greatness of glycerol without the gunk! Try preparing an 80% glycerol solution. It’s way easier to work with! Here’s a practical look at how you can do it.

It's so fun teaching my lab members protein purification! Yesterday was injecting our protein sample into a sample loop, and starting SEC run on an AKTA. I'm working to build up a series of tutorial videos for my lab members, so thought I'd share here as well. youtu.be/r5AO5ojH5D8

Putting the chrom- in size exclusion chromatography (SEC) standards! Today we ran gel filtration standards on our size exclusion chromatography (SEC) column. And a couple of them (vitamin B12 and myoglobin) are colored! youtube.com/shorts/981nO...

The keys to connecting a SEC (Size Exclusion Chromatography)/Gel Filtration column to an FPLC: don't let in air; don't let the column get dry; don't let the pressure get too high. youtu.be/o0ya3EpM86o

Mind the gaps! Beware parts of the model may not be there! Scientists build structural models into experimental maps. Sometimes the experimental data is not strong enough in places, so the model has gaps! youtu.be/Vl_jcEx3jS4

As I've begun building my lab and introducing students to protein purification, seeing their excitement, it's really hit home how incredible proteins are and how immense a privilege it is to get to explore them. I love feeling that I'm empowering my students with skills that can take them far.
