With a $5.5 million NIH grant, an NC State behavioral vet has joined the fight against #opioidaddiction. Dr. Margaret Gruen aims to find ways to measure how chronic pain affects how dogs think and behave. Knowing those biopsychosocial effects of pain is important for treatment.

Another beautiful human being who gives me hope.
Third-year NC State vet student Joe Richardson is the son and grandson of trail-blazing doctors who spent decades serving rural Hertford County, NC. He is planning to care for people, too — by caring for their animals. The question is, which ones? #ruralveterinarian #ncpol
