Some people hated the 'cop-out' ending, I get this - especially as there were explanations they could have dropped in - but I don't care as I was too emotionally wrecked.

I've found Americans almost universally lovely when over there, which is why it's so baffling that they have such awful government.

And (assuming she worked) retired at 60 whereas her grandkids will count themselves lucky to retire at 70. Still, at least they'll probably have a fat inheritance to soften the blow.
