Oops, sorry! I've only just joined so I assumed it was current. But yes, last year was frightening. This year, I can't speak for Wales but I've been doing the butterfly count here and in 15 mins I can log 40+ butterflies, plus dragonflies, moths, beetles etc. Not seen a single ladybird though...

I believe you. I do seem to be in a very insect-rich area (Cowal) and as it's my first year living here, I don't have any frame of reference. I moved up from South Wales, where the insect population was almost zero last year. I'd walk through wildflower meadows without a single bee or butterfly.
