Actually, he fought in Spain on the Republican or Loyalist (as opposed to the Fascist rebels) side. He ran guns to Ethiopia in 1935 when they fought against Italian fascist aggression, while the world turned its collective back.

If you haven't seen the biopic "John Candy: I Like Me" I highly recommend it. Not only was he a talented comedian, he was a beautiful human being. He is missed.
