'ernbas' (I believe 'ernmaiss' is a form of this) is a nicely effective word: It's 'bás' (death) combined with 'íarn' (iron) to describe death from combat

I first assumed it was a French graal reference (holy grail conceived of as a dish); but after reading it, my best guess is a real dish that evokes a shield, hence the odd placement of the dish being on the arm. Not pinging any associations w/ saga, which is more abt cauldrons.
