More experienced or rich mages will use gloves to keep their hands clean, as continued magic use with bare hands will gradually darken the skin (similarly to how skin can become calloused or rough).
Old tomes are often stained or have residue smears

I hc that some types of magic, such as fire, lightning and dark, leave behind an ashy residue after being cast. If the magic is cast via hand, it will usually appear on the fingertips and palms. If a staff or other weapon is used, it will build up near the end that concentrates the energy #fe
