Oh but if you have a history degree then you're truly bona fide! Doesn't get more bona fide. I'm also not attached to an academic institution and that has never been an obstacle to my getting into any archives, public or private. I think Imperial just doesn't want tourists or something?

BONA FIDE. 😂 What is their definition of bona fide. For Oxford University's archives I also had to describe my research project and why I needed to see those documents, but there were no follow up questions or anything. I think if you describe what you're researching it should be enough?

What secrets are they hiding haha. I want to see a 19th century guy's ledgers at a private bank & the bank is also making it rather difficult to get in. But I'll persevere. Privacy is all well and good but when the people concerned have been dead for almost 200 years, c'mon. Hope you succeed!

How strange! Are you researching something specific or do you just want to have a look at what they have? You could always say that you have a research project even if you're just looking into something for fun.

The real historical Franklin Expedition and the real Fitzjames indeed interested me enough to pursue research and an MA. And thanks to The Terror I learnt about the existence of the Franklin Expedition.

Slight correction: I have an MA in history so hardly an amateur. 🙂 The Terror did introduce me to the Franklin Expedition but the Fitzjames character didn't interest me at all.

I was thinking a Crozier plus Banbridge local history museum. And when it comes to displaying artefacts, it would certainly be more of the latter than the former. 😅 They would have to get a little creative with the Crozier exhibits.

The Terror is a great fictional introduction to the Franklin Expedition and I hope it inspires many people to read about the real history.
