I recently learned that that you can also record your process with CSP. That's pretty helpful i would say.

I think it does not really matter.
If you have a core idea, you design the rest around it. Most of my chars are designed with elements in mind first, but i also do looks first as well and build around that.
Though i think the outcome might still be different depending on which one you do first.
