#OnThisDay Sept 7, 1876: The James-Younger Gang attempt to rob the First National Bank in Northfield, Minnesota. Citizens rise up to stop the robbery, resulting in the death of 2 gang members, the wounding of others, and capture of the Younger brothers. Jesse and Frank James barely escape alive.
The building in which First National Bank was located when the Younger Bros made the raid sept 1876. Handsome 3 story stone building with 6 arches on the first floor, 6 tall rounded windows on the 2nd, and an arched attic under wooden roof. Newspaper engraving of the incredible street scene in usually quiet Northfield Minnesota. The gang attempts to flee the bank to the right and left as citizens from fire guns, men and horses lay dead in the intersection.

Quirky (kwәr-kē), adjective: having many quirks — a peculiar trait or idiosyncrasy — usually in an interesting or appealing way.

The Spring 2025 edition of Common Time in the Voice asks Carls the question: When people say Carleton is quirky, what do they mean?

Carolina Cabanela-Leiseth, who has hot pink curly hair, laughs and reclines on top of a picnic table, wearing hounds-tooth high heels, a black skirt and tights, a crocheted sunflower cardigan, and glasses. Jedi Calvin sits and leans up against a brick wall with a chalk drawing of a unicorn pegasus and the words, "Be Special!" Mia Alyssa Lorenzo sits on her dorm room floor as she smiles and looks up past the camera, surrounded by fake candles, gemstones, and tarot cards.

I started a new thing at Carleton College! It highlights the breadth of a liberal arts education, reminds students that faculty don't know EVERYTHING, and is loads of fun!

In "Guess Lectures," faculty give 7-minute talks using someone else’s slides from an unrelated discipline, sight unseen.
