Watched Robert Altman's 'The Player' for the first time since 1992, now featured as part of the Criterion Channel's Altman festival. Tim Robbins is a standout as a bumptious Hollywood studio exec. But a young Lyle Lovett steals the show.

While my own car is at the dealer for maintenance, and while driving around town in a loaner car from the dealer, I take credit for the smallest amount of civic pride in adding the local NPR stations to the loaner's existing beats-and-jams-centric radio pre-sets.

Today marked the final day for Waterloo Records’ iconic location—a world-class shop that truly defined Austin. Thanks for welcoming me in April for book interview/signing for ‘Down on the Corner: Adventures & Street Music.’ Wishing success down the street—can’t wait to visit when next in Austin.

Some records are so groundbreaking they deserve to be celebrated on every anniversary, not just the round-numbered ones. This EP, released 43 years ago today—August 24, 1982, on I.R.S. Records—changed my life and the lives of so many others. The rest, as they say, is history.

Some groundbreaking recordings deserve remembrance on round-numbered anniversaries. This EP, for all the ways it changed my life and those of so many others, merits mention on every anniversary. Released August 24, 1982 on I.R.S. Records. The rest is history.

A blast to talk with Tracy and Phil at Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley’s @CVWeekly for their podcast. We spoke about my book about busking (‘Down on the Corner’) and my love for the endangered species of city weekly newspapers. Podcast goes live in September.

A night of Hi-Desert royalty at Pappy & Harriet’s: Ben Vaughn (Lisa Mednick Powell sitting in); Black Sugar; and Robert Garson (with JT’s own Victoria Williams). Impressive registry of desert music scenesters too, as venue actively seeks to reconnect with community. The evening did not disappoint.

Happy birthday to Terry Adams, elder statesman and rollicking keyboardist in NRBQ, born August 14, 1948 in Louisville, Ky. Photo snapped in August 2022 at Pappy & Harriet’s. I hope they’ll return to the West Coast sooner than later.

Happy and healthy birthday to Raul Malo, vox extraordinaire in The Mavericks. He’s battled debilitating health struggles in recent years, coming through like the champ he is. Sending all the healing vibes I can muster. You wouldn’t have known it from the band’s dynamic July show at Acrisure Arena

A nice review of my book about busking, ‘Down on the Corner,’ from a publication I hadn’t heard of (The KC Counselor, the legal journal of the Kansas City area). And I suppose that’s fair as the reviewer had never previously heard the word “busking.” So we both learned something.

“Time to resign from the human race
Baby, wave to the man in the ol’ red caboose
Before all hell breaks loose.”
