Back in pandemic days, when stores were out of yeast, I found a baking supply store that shipped me 20# of yeast and I sold the bricks to my friends (at cost!) I've had my pound of yeast all that time and I always proof it before baking--it's still as active as ever. That's freezer storage for you!

Not a great picture but I was just struck by my red osier dogwood over here being quietly beautiful🌱

I went outside for some fresh air before a raft of new executive orders come down, and I just liked the way the sun is hitting this golden groundsel 🌱

Some garden treasures at Hillwood Museum in Washington DC. A must visit for anyone interested in gardens and the lives of wildly wealthy people. 🌱

These bleeding heart are new to my garden and I love them. They were planted right before a heatwave last year and they promptly shriveled and “died” or so I thought. But they were just waiting for the right time. 🥰🌱

These grabber thingies have been clutch for me in similar situations.

Somehow I was able to convince The Hechinger Report and @edwriters.bsky.social to pay for me go to New Zealand to report on “maths.” I visited schools in Auckland, Dunedin, Christchurch and Wellington. I interviewed dozens. Everyone was wonderful.

I learned that New Zealand was going through struggles familiar to the U.S. -- sliding math scores, achievement gaps between rich and poor, and between students of different ethnic groups. I thought our audience would be interested in hearing how another country deals with this.

In the fall of 2023, I attended a conference of the National Teachers of Mathematics to pick up story ideas. I over heard a snippet of a conversation about math instruction in New Zealand, and thought "huh, that sounds interesting" -- so I started doing some research. (All photos by Becki Moss)

That's the thing! I was so close to buying this and honestly, I probably might have liked it, but I just couldn't buy 18 cakes of it (I took a picture to ask my FB friends about it later)

Back in 2020 when we were all baking in lockdown and the stores were running out of yeast, I scored 20 1-pound bricks of yeast from a baking supply store and sold them to my friends (at cost, ofc) And here we are 4+ years later and that yeast is still good (the secret is to freeze it)

Hey all! This little nugget, now 12 years old, is going to be a "poll ambassador" (greeter) at a local polling place today! Please return to this picture as needed, and let's do this thing!

GardenSky, a landscaper developed a beautiful design for my front yard, but very few of the lavender plants survived. (maybe 2 out of 8?) I suspect that the area have been too moist and the soil too rich for them. Any alternative suggestions? Mid-Atlantic natives a plus. Zone 7b. Thank you! 🌱

My kid adores this series so of course we had to get this from the Scholastic book fair. I was CREEPED OUT, but for him it was just another exciting tale.

When I tell people I work at a "The Hechinger Report," DMV residents of a certain age ask "oh, is it connected to the hardware store?" (It's not.)
