Panel 2: FigureA continues, unmoving, saying "Like literally chill out" as FigureB looks about to run, the room is burning around them.

Panel 3: FigureA continues, unmoving, arms crossed, eyes closed, as they stand on a raft in the middle of the water, sharks circle, their fins visible above the waterline. They are saying "You are being dramatic" to FigureB, who has climbed them and are holding on for dear life because the raft is only big enough for FigureA to stand on without possibly upsetting it.

Panel 4: FigureA is now sitting in a plane beside FigureB, their eyes remain closed, arms crossed as they insist "It's not the end of the world". FigureB, meanwhile, clings to the arms of his seat as alarms blare and oxygen masks drop from the ceiling, fairly good indicators that the plane is, indeed, going down.

The older I get, the more I understand the weary expression on my parent's faces when I went through my 'hippy phase' in the mid-90s and would frequently babble at them about whatever 1960s/70s factoid I'd recently discovered, like I'd just unearthed some fascinating tidbit of ancient history.

A bunch of people in a swimming pool full of what looks like gross sludgy brown water (poo?) with a big silver pipe dumping more gross poo water into the pool. Some people look like they're wearing red baseball caps, others are wearing white pointed hoods, there's a shark fin in there, some people look like they're drowning others seem to be arguing with each other. One person is speaking via speech bubble to another and saying "I'm starting to think this is not as fun as it used to be..."

We had an interesting Zoom meeting with Linden Lab, and it turned out to be a pretty enlightening conversation. Here’s the rundown of what we talked about and some of my thoughts.
1️⃣ They’re Refocusing on Us (Finally!)
LL openly admitted they’ve been prioritizing initiatives that aren’t helpful for us or for attracting new residents. They’re now shifting their focus to better align with what we need and what will grow the platform. The topic of mutual trust came up a lot, and honestly, I felt like they actually heard us this time.
2️⃣ Mobile
They’re nervous about the mobile app, and not without reason. Years of work and millions of dollars have gone into it, but they’re now facing legal and regulatory challenges that are slowing things down. It sounds like they kind of jumped in headfirst and didn’t consider all the potential roadblocks. That said, they were crystal clear: without a mobile app, SL would be on its way out. It’s not just about growth—it’s about survival.
3️⃣ Culture Shift
LL knows they’ve been dropping the ball in terms of communication and engagement. They’re promising to work with us, not against us, and they’re open about not being able to deliver everything we want due to legal/tech limits. They also aren’t launching some big marketing campaign about this shift—they’re banking on us noticing the changes and spreading the word. So… here I am doing my part. While I believe they were genuine in their impetus for change, I have to say, some moments in the call felt a little sales-y and disconnected—like they didn’t fully grasp what Seraphim actually does.
4️⃣ Listening to Critics
They emphasized that they’re making an effort to hear all voices, even those that have been critical in the past. They emphasized how important it is for them to hear diverse perspectives, even if they’re not always positive. It’s a good sign that they’re prioritizing open dialogue moving forward.

5️⃣ Residents as Resources
They shared some future initiatives and straight-up admitted they don’t know how to make them all happen. They asked for insight, ideas, and help. We didn't hold back and now, some things might be on the horizon. Watch this space.
6️⃣ SL Economy Insights
They explained some behind-the-scenes stuff about the SL economy, particularly around third-party fees. The TLDR? Those deep-discount events are so impactful that they’re causing shifts in the economy at the highest levels, and not all of those shifts are good. Also, they're not all bad. They are, however, imbalanced, and it is important we find balance again.
7️⃣ Longevity Concerns
I brought up my skepticism about SL’s longevity, and they seemed genuinely surprised. They explained that their strategy now is to get back to the core of what makes SL work. The recent layoffs were part of that—letting go of talented people whose skill sets didn’t align with the new direction. They seemed pretty regretful about it, which was nice to hear.
8️⃣ Declining Sales
When we talked about creators seeing drops in sales, they were surprised to hear how that has impacted our retail community. Like… how are they just now hearing about this? They own Caspervend, for crying out loud. But at least they promised to dig into it.
9️⃣ Phillip’s Influence
It’s hard to ignore the timing: Phillip Rosedale comes back as more than just an advisor, and suddenly LL’s leadership is engaging with us more directly. Coincidence? Doubt it. I just hope this isn’t all smoke and mirrors and that they’re serious about these changes.
Overall, it was an encouraging chat. If they’re serious about these shifts, it could mean great things for SL’s future. Here’s hoping. 🥂
