This story is going under the radar: hundreds of public housing agencies around the country are short on funds and were unable to pay some/all of their Section 8 landlords on Dec. 1.

It's a remnant of the shutdown. Here's our local take at @brooklinenews.bsky.social

BHA late on December payments to hundreds of Section 8 landlords in Brookline because of federal funding delays - Brookline.News
The same situation is facing hundreds of public housing agencies across the country, and industry leaders say the recent federal government shutdown is to blame.

this is one thing that slid in under the wire just before the FDA turned to shit
“An accessible alternative to the Pap smear has been endorsed by the American Cancer Society. On Thursday, it released new guidelines saying that self-collection is an acceptable way to test for the virus that causes cervical cancer.
The guidelines reflect years of data &recent regulatory approvals”

Researchers who have been doxxed for their academic work have been shouting this for years: we need a plan to protect ourselves from concerted, politically motivated attacks on individuals. We need this at the grassroots level, at the departmental level, at the institutional level.

Tenured profs were all insufferable "box checking people pleasers" in order to get here. Then, post tenure, we spend the rest of our days as micro aggressive non box checking people displeasers to feel some sort of power ......
The other thing I’ll say is…OK, how do I put this. If you have ever tried to get faculty to do anything…you become aware pretty quickly that “reading instructions” is not real high on their list of skills. I love every single one of you but.

My dad had so much pride, he wanted to find out who helped so he could repay them. No one would tell. I asked him what you were supposed to do in that situation. He thought for a moment and then told me the only way to repay the debt was to help someone else when we could.

A *huge* vaccine victory. I've been writing on this for years; Australia has seen remarkable progress in cervical cancer prevention with the HPV vaccine. I love seeing science triumph like this.
Australia recorded ZERO cases of cervical cancer in women under 25 for the first time since they started tracking the cancer in the 80s.

This is the power of vaccines.

The HPV vaccine is extremely effective at preventing cancer.

Viruses can be oncogenic. Get your vaccines and protect yourself!
newsGP - Australia set for world-first cervical cancer elimination
Vaccination programs have played a key role, and GPs remain ‘instrumental’ in boosting screening rates to reach the 2035 target.
